Everyone wants a bright, white smile. While there are products and procedures designed to whiten your teeth, there are things that you can do every day to make sure that your teeth remain as bright and as healthy as possible.

Certain foods can discolor your teeth. Marinara, or spaghetti sauce; red wine, coffee and tea, along with colored foods like berries can make your teeth a shade or two darker. If you enjoy foods or beverages that can stain your teeth, it’s a good idea to rinse with water after a meal, brush your teeth twice a day, and when possible, about thirty minutes after you eat. When you brush, use a toothpaste containing fluoride, which will strengthen your enamel. Floss every night, since that will help to remove plaque that can give stains a foothold on your teeth.

Fruits and vegetables like apples and carrots will clean your teeth, and getting plenty of calcium through dairy products or a supplement will make your teeth stronger as well.

There are toothpastes designed to whiten your teeth, and there are over-the-counter whitening kits available in many stores. Before starting any dental treatment on your own, you should speak with your dentist.

The most safest and most effective whitening treatment is available from your dentist. You will hold a tray containing a whitening gel in your mouth for about twenty minutes, and the dentist may give you a kit for you to use at home.
